Since we are right on the doorstep of a new month, we wanted to share that October is set aside to raise awareness for certain “abilities” we LOVE at Runnin’ WJ Ranch.
First, October is National Down Syndrome month. You cannot help but smile when you glance at the face of a child, teenager or adult blessed with an extra chromosome. In fact, check out this video of some friends with Down Syndrome dancing to the popular song, Happy by Pharrell Williams.
Be sure to check with us on Twitter this month at @RunninWJ as we share great blogs and resources all about Down Syndrome.
October is also Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Spina Bifida is a congenital defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord and its meninges are exposed through a gap in the backbone. It often causes paralysis of the lower limbs, and sometimes mental handicap. We will also share great blogs and resources about SB during the month on Twitter.
Even though we do not have any licensed physical therapists at Runnin’ WJ Ranch, we do want to raise awareness of National Physical Therapy Month, also October. Therapeutic riding provides great physical exercise to children, teenagers and adults with special needs. Physically, the horse in motion, moves a rider with disabilities rhythmically and naturally through space in a way that simulates the human walking gait. This type of motion develops core muscle strength, balance and posture. Horseback riding also develops gross and fine motor control and promotes coordination.
At Runnin’ WJ Ranch, we don’t like the word “disability”. Although these diagnoses greatly change the life of a family and a child, we believe children living at physical therapy and with Spina Bifida or with an extra chromosome are some of God’s most precious creations.
Be sure to keep up with us on social media this month and right here as we honor families and individuals living with Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida and in Physical Therapy.
